Outreach at Truro

As a church, we affirm and respond in obedience to the Lord’s Great Commandment to love God and love others, and to the Great Commission charge to make disciples. Our desire is to know, love, and serve God in our community and the world.

Truro is built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ. “For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11). Upon that foundation of Jesus alone, our four pillars are the Word, worship, community, and outreach. Holding these pillars together enables us to accomplish our purpose of “Celebrating and Proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel.” Whether on our campus, in our neighborhoods, across the country, or around the world, all that we do revolves around the good news of what God has done for us in Jesus. This motivates our passion for outreach which is to demonstrate and declare this gospel in action! We desire to engage all of our congregation in outreach on three levels — local, domestic, and international.

Truro Campus-Based Outreach Ministries

TIPS (Truro International Programs and Services)

The central opportunity to engage the members of Truro on all three of these levels is through the ministry of TIPS. TIPS intersects with local, domestic, and international levels of engagement here on our campus and requires a large volunteer base and staff support. Through TIPS, God is literally bringing people of all nations to our door.

Serve with TIPS

Truro Preschool and Kindergarten (TPK)

TPK is a long-standing outreach ministry to the City of Fairfax and beyond, and it deserves our intentional partnership, prayer, and promotion. Not all children and families who enroll in TPK are followers of Jesus, yet they are on our campus nearly every day twice a day.

Local

Truro is uniquely located in Historic Fairfax near the restaurant district, the Fairfax County Judicial Center, City Hall, Fairfax High School, Katherine Johnson Middle School, Daniel’s Run Elementary School, and George Mason University. In all directions, within a short walk or drive from our campus, are all sorts of different kinds of neighborhoods. We want to pray for, love, and serve this community in ways that are relational, practical, meaningful, and transformational.

The Lamb Center

The Lamb Center, a daytime, drop-in center for homeless individuals, was opened in November 1992 as a ministry of Truro. The center opened in a 3,000 square foot room over a pawnshop on Lee Highway in Fairfax. As a Christian ecumenical human services organization, the Lamb Center works on behalf of all people experiencing poverty or homelessness regardless of race, religion, creed, or any other status. The core values of Christianity are central to the Lamb Center’s ministry: loving God with all one’s heart, soul, mind, and strength; and loving one’s neighbors as oneself.

Other Opportunities

Community Groups are natural incubators for neighborhood-centric outreach. These groups may want to consider opportunities to love and serve their neighbors in the communities where they live. Reading The Art of Neighboring: Building Genuine Relationships Right Outside Your Door or exploring the Art of Neighboring website will change how you see and think about where you live.

Outreach Groups. We recognize that members of Truro are actively involved in viable, fruitful ministries outside our current areas of focus. We long to say “Yes!” to our members’ passion for outreach!

If a member of Truro would like to share an activity, event, or ministry with the church, he or she may present that opportunity to the clergy ([email protected]) for vetting. Once approved, those opportunities will be listed as an “Outreach Group” on the Truro website.
