Dear Truro family,
Why does the Bible encourage us to lift our hands in worship? I can think of at least four reasons why!
- In praise: “So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.”(Ps. 63:4)
- In prayer: “I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling…” (1 Tim. 2:8)
- In need: “Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy, when I cry to you for help, when I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary.” (Ps. 28:2)
- In victory: “And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, ‘Amen, Amen,’ lifting up their hands.” (Nehemiah 8:6)
God has created us to be physically expressive people. It comes naturally to us in almost every part of our lives! Yet far too often, when we gather to worship God with the people of God, we squelch our physical expressiveness because we’re self-conscious. I encourage you to feel safe and free here at Truro to lift your hands as a Biblical and physical expression of worship to God. He is worthy of your praise – and your hands!
