Clergy Notes – October 4th, 2024

Dear Truro family,

Like you, I’ve been grieving the impacts of Hurricane Helene, the outbreak of war in the Middle East, and many other heartbreaking situations in our country and world. How should we respond? First, as the people of God, we must pray. One of the cruelest deceptions of the devil has been to convince us that prayer doesn’t make a difference, or is a last resort, or is a sign of weakness. That’s nonsense. Prayer is the most effective thing we can do, because God answers our prayers. Pray for the victims of the storm and for the victims (and the end) of war. This is what the Bible teaches: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Phil. 4:6)

Second, be generous. In today’s Truro News, we’ll share with you how to give to the Anglican Relief and Development Fund. They are on the ground, partnering with Anglican churches in hurricane-ravaged and war-torn areas. This week I’ve been in touch with Michael and Hannah King, former Truro clergy who serve a church in Clyde, NC (25 miles west of Asheville). Their house is fine. When we spoke, Hannah told me that a truck from ARDF was about to arrive with supplies. You can trust the ARDF.

Pray. And give. “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:7)
