Clergy Notes – February 7th, 2025

Dear Truro family,

One of the things I love about Truro is that we’re a singing church. The Bible is full of exhortations and reasons to sing. Colossians 3:16 always comes to mind:

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…”

  • Singing allows the good news of Jesus to dwell richly in us. You may have noticed that you remember what you sing. It’s why commercial jingles are so catchy! Every time you sing, you’re preaching to yourself.

“…teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom…”

  • You’re also preaching to the people around you in the pews. When we sing, we’re encouraging one another with what’s true.

“…singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…”

  • We sing a variety of songs, spanning centuries and styles. God is worthy of it all.

“…with thankfulness in your hearts to God”.

  • Whenever we sing, the Holy Spirit moves in our hearts. This often spreads to our bodies! Sometimes we’re drawn to our knees, or to our feet, and sometimes we’re drawn to clap – or lift – our hands. These are biblical and physical expressions of our deep thankfulness to God.

So come ready to sing this Sunday. Don’t be bashful about your voice, and don’t worry if you don’t think you’re much of a singer. God has given you a voice that no one else has, and he’s given you 10,000 reasons to praise him.
