I didn’t think that Alpha was for me. When I first started coming to Truro a few years ago, I heard a lot about Alpha and how everyone should participate in it, but I was a little hesitant. Wasn’t Alpha for beginning Christians who didn’t know Jesus? I knew Jesus, thank you very much. I thought I had it all figured out and that I knew what kind of church experience I was looking for, and at the time, Alpha wasn’t what I had in mind.

However, I started working with the Alpha team last fall and the experience has changed my life. I have seen the transformative power of God working through Alpha every single week. Whether through the direct simplicity of the talks, the community formed in small groups, or the simple healing of sharing a meal together with people that know your name, the changes I have witnessed in myself and others is almost unspeakable.

I have seen people come to know Jesus and their community in ways that they have never experienced before, and I have noticed growth for all the guests that have tried Alpha. Even me, running around helping with the details of the night and not involved in a small group, has been changed in intangible ways through the last four courses I’ve helped with. This transformation is not one-size-fits-all; the experiences of every single friend is unique. I have seen every person changed by God in a completely individual way that is facilitated and encouraged by the safe, inclusive community that Alpha provides.

So, I was right, in a way. Alpha isn’t for me.

Alpha is for us.
