I didn’t think I’d like Alpha before I tried it. I was already a Christian, so I wasn’t expecting to get anything out of it. But, the more I experience it, the more things I love about it. Here are a few of the things I love about Alpha:
There’s a free meal
Who doesn’t love free food? A night of Alpha is split into three parts: a meal, a talk, and then a discussion. Our hope is that everyone will try Alpha, so there’s no cost. We think that bonding over a meal is a super important way to build community and trust, so we always start Alpha with food!
You get to learn about important aspects of Christianity
After dinner, there’s a talk. Each week we talk about a different topic of Christianity ranging from questions like, “Who is Jesus?” to “Does God Heal Today?” These talks are quick and informative and whether you’re new to exploring faith or if you’ve been a Christian for years, there’s a lot that you can get out of them each week.
No question is too hostile or too simple
Next, there’s the small group time. This is after we’ve shared our thoughts on Christianity and now we want to hear yours. Anything you want to share with the group is welcomed, as long as you are all respectful of each other. No one will judge you for your questions because most people are asking the same things! We want everyone to feel safe and free to ask or say anything that’s on their mind when they’re in their small group.
You don’t have to say anything
You also don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to. There’s never going to be any pressure to share if you’d rather listen to other people’s thoughts. I know I am always scared of being called on in a group setting, but there’s no pressure of that here. Of course, we’d love to hear from you, but sharing is completely up to you!
You get to meet interesting people
Life can be lonely, so we think that any environment that brings people together to engage is worthwhile. Discussing such important questions about life brings people together; we find that a lot of groups that start on Alpha want to continue to see each other even after the course is finished.
You can come as you are.
Really, truly, we want to build relationships with people and to love them where they’re at. The only expectations we have are that people come with questions and a willingness to listen!
Our next Alpha Course is starting on October 4th at 7pm. I hope that you’ll come out and experience Alpha for yourself, and who knows? Maybe you’ll fall in love with it, just like I did.
